Writing Center Conferences: More than Just the Writing

Sarah Lee is a Junior  double  majoring in Philosophy and Economics. She was awarded a Spring 2019 Conference Grant which she used to attend the Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference. I had the opportunity to attend the  2019 Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference, held at the DoubleTree Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort. There, I spent three days going to sessions about a range of issues related to and located within the Writing Center, meeting students and faculty from across the Southeastern U.S., and of course, presenting my own research about genre theory and informing tutoring practices with knowledge of genre – “ Writing in Philosophy Courses: Writing Conventions, Analysis, and Strategies .”

Featured Undergraduate Researcher- Camilla Reed-Guevara

Our featured student researcher of the month is Camila Reed-Guevara, a senior Classics and Philosophy major who focuses on ethics. As a prior SURE student, conference grant recipient, and a current Mellon Mays Undergraduate fellow, she has had a unique experience in undergraduate research. 

Non-Structural Protein 1 (NS1) in Zika Virus Pathogenesis

Rumi  Habib is a senior who is a Biology and Philosophy double major. He was awarded a Fall 2018 Independent Grant which he used to conduct research on the Zika Virus under Dr. Ioanna  Skountzou. Although it was first discovered in 1947, the Zika virus didn’t enter the headlines until 2015. During the 2015-2016 epidemic, a wave of infants born with  microcephaly , a neurodevelopmental condition that causes babies to have smaller than normal heads, resulted in the World Health Organization declaring the outbreak an international public health emergency. Viruses in the same family as the Zika virus include dengue, West Nile, and yellow fever. However, during the epidemic it emerged that Zika fever, even though milder than the diseases caused by its relatives, has some very unusual features. Stoics in Granada: My Presentation at the International Conference on Hispanic Literature

Camila Reed-Guevara  is a rising senior double majoring in Classics and Philosophy .  She was awarded a Summer 2018 Conference Grant which she used to attend the  Congresso Internacional de Literatura y Estudios Hispánicos . “Philosophy neither rejects nor chooses anyone: it shines for all.”  Seneca the Younger  I presented my paper titled, “Three Stoic Exemplars: Julia Álvarez’s Mirabal Sisters and Their Place in the Ethical World” at the twenty-second  Congresso Internacional de Literatura y Estudios Hispánicos in Granada, Spain this June.  This conference  is directed by Enrique Herrera, a professor at Lock Haven University, it is bi-annually held in locations in the Hispanic world (Spain, Central, Latin America, and the Caribbean.) I presented on a panel on the subject of female literary figures in Hispanic literature. Two professors from Spanish universities were on the panel with me and I presented second. 

Beyond Kindness and Malice

Xinyue Tong  was awarded a Spring 2016 Conference Grant to present at the Eastern Michigan University Undergraduate Conference in Philosophy. Presenting my philosophy paper “Beyond Kindness and Malice” at Eastern Michigan University (EMU)’s 6 th Undergraduate Conference in Philosophy has been an unforgettable experience and a fond memory. I not only received instructive feedback from my commenter, but also learned from my fellow presenters. Moreover, attending other presentations and conducting further discussions enabled me to learn new perspectives of philosophy.
